Figure-8 Fit

The figure-8 setup provides clearer guidance around the head, helping your dog understand your cues during training. This configuration does not rely on the stopper, as most dogs respond well to the naturally self-limiting loop, making installation quicker and simpler. We recommend starting with this configuration when introducing the lead.

Slip-Lead Mode

Use the slip-lead configuration for relaxed, everyday walks. In this setup, the stopper sets a comfortable closing limit so the loop cannot tighten indefinitely. This makes it a simple and secure option once your dog responds calmly and no longer needs the extra guidance of the figure-8 fit.

Slip-Lead → Figure-8 Twist

A small number of dogs that pull more firmly may benefit from this option. By adding a simple twist from slip-lead mode, you create a figure-8 loop while keeping the stopper active. This lets the stopper maintain a comfortable closing limit, adding an extra safety boundary when needed.

Will this choke my dog?

Most dogs walk comfortably with the standard figure-8 configuration. The loop around the nose stays loose and does not restrict the mouth, so your dog can fully pant, drink, sniff, and take treats as normal.

For dogs that pull very strongly, you can use the Slip → Figure-8 Twist option. This keeps the stopper active, which prevents the loop from closing beyond your chosen limit and gives you smoother control while keeping the fit comfortable and safe.

Why is the rope firm at first?

Our rope uses a static-core construction for clearer guidance and better control. It may feel firm when brand new, which is completely normal for high-density static ropes. After a few walks the outer braid softens naturally while the core keeps its strength and stability. This ensures long-term comfort without losing the responsiveness that makes training easier.

Can my dog slip out?

When the lead is fitted correctly, it is very difficult for a dog to slip out. The rope uses a static, non-stretch construction, which means it holds its position and does not loosen on its own. Softer or elastic-style leads can widen when the dog shakes or changes direction, but static rope stays put.

The stopper sets the maximum opening size of the loop, so it cannot widen beyond the point you choose. Just make sure you leave a little room for comfort, but not so much that the loop can expand during movement. Once the stopper is adjusted, it stays in place.

For added security, the lead also includes a safety backup clip that attaches to your dog’s collar. This acts as a fail-safe for dogs that are unusually good at slipping out of equipment.

Do I need to watch the tutorials first?

Most issues people experience with figure of 8 leads come from not watching the tutorial videos before the first walk. You can find them under LASR Pet Store > Tutorial Videos (second tab).

The videos are very short, but they show exactly how to set the loop, choose the correct mode and position the stopper. Once you understand these steps, the lead becomes much easier to use and the walk becomes more comfortable for your dog.
